As a bit of a preface, take note that this blog entry really should be before the one that I made last night. I kinda forgot to write this one before and no it’s somewhat of a jumbled mess. I’m sure you can all work it out though.

Anyway… as I’m sure many of you already know, I finished the High School Certificate last year and am off to uni this year. Living in rural Australia, there are obviously no universities near where I live so I had to move. I didn’t really have much of a problem with this though, because I don’t really like Kempsey all that much anyway. I pretty much had a choice of whatever uni I wanted to go to (my UAI was high enough to do engineering wherever I wanted to). I choose to go to The University of Newcastle though for quite a few reasons, even though it’s not the best in Australia (don’t get me wrong, Newcastle Uni is still pretty good). Firstly, my older sister goes there doing a double Science/Arts degree, and also I have lots of extended family in the region. I have an Aunt and cousins in Maitland, and my grandparents live on the central coast. Most of my friends (the ones that count anyway :P , sorry Corey) go there as well.

So yeah, Software Engineering at Newcastle Uni, should be exciting. xD

Oh right the other half of the story. Okay okay I’m getting to that now. I moved into a share house with a few of my friends from school, Simon and Dan. The other people staying here are a girl our age called Kate (she’s pretty nice) and a mature aged student called Ha. She’s only here on weeknights though, because she goes back to Sydney to be with her husband and kids on the weekends.

Anyway, that’s about it for now. Maybe I will write a bit more about it later when I’m not feeling so sleepy. Being a uni student is hard work (or maybe it’s just me trying to get used to waking up at 7am :S)

I got a new laptop xD February 2, 2008

Well, as the post title says, I have recently gotten a new laptop. It actually happened a about two weeks ago now but as you may have noticed I haven’t really been writing much lately here. I got it pretty much because my desktop is kinda old and I’m heading off to uni this year. I figured that a new laptop would make things easier at uni so I could take custom compilers and my own IDEs and stuff wherever I got (I’m doing software engineering). In case you are wondering, I got the money from a scholarship I won for getting dux of me school w00t!

Anyway, I’m sure you want to  hear the juicy details about it so here are the specs:

It’s a Dell Inspiron 1525 with a Core 2 Duo T7250 (2.0GHz), 2GiB of RAM, Intel X3100 (Yes crappy I know but I don’t plan on doing any gaming) and a 15′ WXGA+ (1440×900) screen. Also, it has a microfibre finish which is made of metal but feels really soft. I got the finish Coffee Brown to show my support for Ubuntu.  The rest of it is pretty standard with wireless, bluetooth, webcam etc. It came with Vista so that was the first thing to go. It’s now sporting a new Ubuntu Gutsy 64 bit install xD. Best thing was, it only cost me AU$1300 (with a 2 yr warranty). Computer’s can be expensive here compared to the rest of the world, so I thought it was a pretty good bargain.

Anyway, all-in-all very happy with my purchase xD

NovaAesa is now a moderator! February 1, 2008

Yes that’s right I’m now a moderator. I now have all those cool powers that moderators get – editing/moving/deleting posts, administering appropriate disciplinary actions to those who are naughty, and of course the other more boring tasks such as stickyfying threads and stuff.

For those who may be wondering, I’m not talking about Ubuntu Forums but rather I’m talking about the Unofficial University of Newcastle Forum. It’s the student forum for the university I am starting at this year. YAY! Only 10 days until I go to uni!

Anyway, join up if you happen to go (or will go) to the University of Newcastle. We don’t have very many members right now because the forum has only just started but apparently it is going to be advertised during o-week so I have a feeling its going to be big. Yah so join up, or at least check it out.
